Greetings!
Welcome to the first in a series of newsletters designed to acquaint
you with the activities of the S'Kool Music Committee. This Committee
was formed as a result of the continuing financial crisis in the
State of California and the resulting budget cuts in our public
schools. Over the past few years, music programs offered in California's
schools have been slowly but surely cut by the lack of funds to
support the programs. This has caused many schools to drop music
courses from the curriculum, dismiss music teachers, and curtail
the purchase, rental or repair of musical instruments.
Operating
a music store has brought me into contact with many parents who
have been affected by the continuing closure of these programs.
Their children are being denied the opportunity to pursue a musical
education and experience an introduction to the wonders of music.
Many well-documented studies have shown a relationship between the
study of music and students' performance in general academics. These
studies also point out the modifying effect music has on children's
behavior. We must realize that an introduction to music is a gateway
to the arts and a wonderful way to generate right brain awareness
in our children.
Please
read on and learn how you can help a concerned group of citizens
preserve and maintain the music programs in our public schools.
It will be rewarding, and a sound investment in the only future
that really matters, the future of our children.
Philip
J. Battaglia
Chairman The S'Kool Music Committee.
